This was one of the tougher design exercises. The bearing assembly is made to clamp on the sandrail frame and control the steering shaft. A couple of pieces of scrap Aluminum conduit were used. The needle bearings are from the reverse idler shaft in a VW transaxle. A VW piston pin fits inside these bearings. Above, you can see the u-joint, a piece of 3/4" tubing, the piston pin and another piece of steering shaft. Not shown are the seals needed to keep the sand out of the bearings. |
